Dears how are you, Anybody can recommend me a cost effective GSM modem that work fine in linux and with our SMS server tool 3?

At this time we are working with Sony cell phones , but i think that may exist a GSM modem for a $100....
what do you think about this?

Any body know if exist a "multiple modem device" for allow 5 or 10 GSM SIM in a single usb modem?

I do not usually recommend any specific device, some device which is based on Wavecom chip is good .

This device from Dealextreme looks very interesting... It's cheap and there are comments which say that it's working under Linux and with Gnokii and Gammu. There was no comments about PDU mode (which is required with Smstools3), but I assume that today all modems have this support. Perhaps I should order this gadget and test it...

In the market there are those kind of devices, at least with serial interface. However, these are expensive and not supported by Smstools3 because it has no built-in functionality for selecting the SIM.

My device are in transit to México.

At least with a rapid test this device looks pretty good, especially when looking the price.

It uses PL2303 converter, and Linux can detect and use without any special actions required. The GSM chip is:

With the Google, AT command manual can be found for this device. I have not read it yet, but will read...

Basic functionality works well. I have sent and received standard messages, and sent multipart Unicode messages successfully.

It seems that status report's does not work, but this should be checked from the manual if some additional initialization/setting is required to get them working.

Less common features I have not yet fully tested. It can hangup incoming call, but needs voicecall_hangup_ath = yes setting. Outgoing voice calls can be made, but it return OK too fast, when a call is not yet answered. However, many other devices are problematic with voicecalls. Missed calls can be detected, but not removed with AT+CPBW=1 command.

Cristian, while waiting for your device to arrive, you could read the manual very carefully, as you do not have any other things to do... You will then know everything about this device, when you receive it and start the smsd with it.

this may solve a lot of problems with your phones... and to sustain the SMS3 project

I was googling "benq m32 at command" and the first result was "M22 / M23 / M23G AT Command User Guide", the link to pdf is http://www.portech.com.tw/data/BenQ%20M23%20AT.pdf

That documents says that it was merged and applies for M32 too. Some other documents are also available, but I have been too busy to check them.

I do not know yet for sure, after quick trying. However, it looks good and if status report is not important, or it can be handled somehow, I think that this kind of a device should be at least as good as a mobile phone with it's cable.

Thank's for the suggestion . Perhaps it's still better that users order their hardware directly from DX, for example because of a warranty

But of course it would be fine to have couple of those hub's, with ten modems connected to each .

I can tell my opinion after couple of weeks, and after lot of SMS messages...

I changed the title of this topic...

A specification of Benq M32 says the status report is supported. However, it seems that those reports cannot be saved into the "SM" storage. There is a "ME" storage available too, but it has no space. Even when "ME" is selected, normal messages are received into the "SM" storage. Smsd can read messages only when "SM" storage is selected.

With an init = AT+CNMI=0,0,0,1,0 this device will route status reports to the smsd and they are (at least usually) handled correctly. With many other modems routing should not be used, and therefore smsd will log an error: "You MUST DISABLE status report routing with modem settings.". I have not found out how status reports can be received as a normal messages with M32. Because of this, the next version will have a setting which changes some severity of a logging and removes that "must disable" instruction.

The feature phonecalls is not supported by M32 is supported with 3.1.7beta6 or later, using the setting phonecalls = clip.

Smsd can detect missed calls, and can read them and write incoming message files, but: M32 does not allow to write to MC storage. Therefore smsd cannot remove processed call entries and will find the same missed calls again and again...

Next version will detect if AT+CPBW=1 command gets ERROR, and after 3 errors this feature is disabled. With current versions this feature just should not be used.

Disconnecting a device, or resetting it, was not enough to clear MC storage. The only way I found to clear it was changing the SIM card.

Cristian, have you already received and tested this device? If you are, what are your experiences?

I dont see nothing in the smsd.log What init string are using?

If you see nothing, probably incoming = yes missing.

How about this: "You'll have to enter the PIN number for your SIM every time you start the PC."? Is that true? How this can be solved?

It depends on the SIM card settings. The PIN can be switched off, and then it's never asked. It's easy to switch of using a handset.
